La Spezia’s SWIFTRAIL project is awarded CEF funding

Zooming in on one of the winning projects of the 2023 CEF Transport Call on Military Mobility: La Spezia’s future new rail freight station!

The port authority (ADSP MLO) of La Spezia and Carrara will obtain €9.2 million euros in EU funding for the implementation of the SWIFTRAIL project, which aims at the construction of the new freight railway station in the port of La Spezia.

Supported among others by ScanMed RFC, the port had submitted its project application as part of the 2023 CEF Transport Call concerning military mobility and the adaptation of the TEN-T to civilian-defence dual use. Thanks to the European Commission’s contribution, which adds to the €39 million euros already disbursed by the Italian government, by 2026 La Spezia will be equipped with a modern rail freight station capable of handling 50% of the containers passing through the port by train.

The port’s president, Mario Sommariva, expressed his satisfaction with the application’s outcome: “The European Commission has recognized the quality of the project as well as the maturity level of the construction works, which will start as early as February 2024. The work of recent months […] shows the attention that the port is placing on intermodal transport and, specifically, on the railway.”

ScanMed RFC congratulates the port authority for this great achievement, which will boost even further La Spezia’s importance as a key hub along the Corridor. We look forward to seeing the new station up and running!
